Cella Beborna (806) |
|
7th century, Saint Audomarus was bishop of Boulogne and Thérouanne.
He had a monastery built at Sithiu, which was erected by three
monks: Mommelinus, Ebertramnus and Bertinus.
The last named gave his name to the foundation: the St.
Bertinus abbey of Sithiu, which played a major part throughout
the Middle Ages. In commemoration of St. Audomarus, this 9th
century Sithiu was called St. Omer. This town is in the north
of France, a region which is called "French Flanders" |

In 806 the St. Bertinus Abbey - represented by the then Abbot
Nanterius - bought a homestead with 10 hectares of land. The
beginning of the deed of sale runs as follows: |
"To the venerable Lord and Father in Christ, Nanterius,
abbot of the monastery Sithiu
and of the cella called Beborna (Bebrona)
and where Ebrogerus is prepositus,
I, Herlarius, seller..." |

This homestead was situated in the place that is referred to as "Vleteren"( Fletrinio) in the Yser pagus ( in pago Isseretio ). From this one may conclude ( but not prove !) that this "Cella Beborna" may have been situated in the vicinity of Vleteren.
Two 17th century documents situate the "cella Beborna" at the
place where the Brigittine monastery used to be, i.c. at the end
of the "Koekuit"street ( which is approximately 800m. from the St.Sixtus
Abbey ) near the "Bornebosschen" ("woods of Borne") and a lane of
the same name. One seems to have realized an etymological link between
"(Be)borna" and "Borne".

The historian Pauwel Heinderyckx (1633-1683) from Veurne writes:
"Eberono or Beberonat,
which once was between Krombeque and Poperyngen
in the woods where now live the Brigittines.
At that time it was a parish
subjected to the rule of the Abbot of Sitieu,
which place some monks have chosen
to live at in community."

Extract from the archives of the city of Poperinge (1627-1654):
The "Bornebosschen" and the "Bornebuschdreve": these woods and
this street were situated in the proximity of the place where
in the 9-th C. the little monastery of Bertinus was situated.
