Christ, beaten and scourged also dominates the richly-dressed Pilate, who is mixed up in a world of cowardice and intrigues, full of anxiety for his social position in this world.
From his judgment seat, on the place Litostrotos, Pilate is looking
shyly away with eyes open wide ; his tightly shut lips and wobbling
little legs betray his disquiet. His hesitating, shaky finger is
pointing to condamn and at the same time he draws back his elbow.
His swollen neck and unhealthy complexion indicate an uncurable
state of disease.
There is an ultimate opportunity for Pilate. As the voice of his conscience, this mysterious figure, Mrs. Pilate, comes to say : " Have thou nothing to do with that just man : for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him."
Yet Pilate delivers Him to the people.
